To the past, current, and future members of the American Hackney Horse Society:
After reviewing the poll responses regarding the continuing to back or discontinuing of backing in Amateur, Ladies, and Juvenile, Hackney and Harness pony classes, the following things have been learned.
First of all, I want to address the issue that many of our members did not receive the email with the polling information. Upon investigation it came to light that many had opted out of receiving emails from the Society. Some, of the conversations that transpired with these individuals were centered around that the intent of them signing up for this option, was to not receive insignificant or inconsequential communications. But they thought they should have received something this important anyway. Unfortunately, there are some that I am sure did not connect with the email for various reasons.
Out of 1150 members in 2025, a total of 346 votes were cast. Of these, 73 votes were not able to be counted. Many were not 2025 members. Several had not been a member for up to 10 years. There were even a few whom had never been a member who cast a vote anyway. And finally, there were those that voted twice or more. Some voting once yes, and once no.
There was also the issue of those that do not have email addresses on file with us or those who do not have or use electronic communications. After reviewing the total count, we could only identify approximately 10 people from this group that weighed in.
After taking these factors into account, all members of this organization must be given a fair and viable opportunity to have their voice heard. Therefore, I feel as though changing the requirements of these classes should be voted on by paper ballot using the same method that is used to elect our board of directors.
Please be advised that this voting ballot will be mailed on or after April 1, to all members that have joined or renewed for the 2026 membership year.
Respectfully,
Andy Freseth
